Reach Goals of the Central IT Business Unit

The Challenge

Any growing organization has many different tasks to perform and business requirements can become more and more refined and specific for a particular business unit or department. APIs are used as building blocks to help those units create more efficient and automated processes and therefore they are also object to those requirements. From a technical perspective however, the
API Management Layer might be operated and maintained by a central team of experts who operate as a business unit of their own.

The requirements of this business units will differ from other more business case-oriented units since the goals of the
API Management team or central IT infrastructure team are tuned towards operational efficiency over all else. Therefore, a conflict might happen if each of several business units requires their own infrastructure including its own administration overhead and products to use. First, the administration team needs to use multiple products to do central management tasks. This requires more expertise from individual team members and also requires the integration of each administration tool into central IT management systems (e.g. a central log management and monitoring system).

Second, for any central maintenance or management task, multiple tools have to be used and executed separately. This creates a redundant work overhead that reduces overall operational efficiency and is a direct issue to reaching the goals of the central IT business unit. One obvious solution to solve this issue would be to streamline the API management solution and use one vendor for all business units. This can create problems in regards to business unit budgeting (license costs, maintenance costs, …), human resources (employees with the right skillset), and conflicts with the business requirements of a particular unit.

Multiple Benefits with just one Solution

The Benefits

Central management capabilities

The APIIDA API Control Plane is designed to connect to many different API gateway runtimes in a central administration portal. This portal allows to manage connections to the different runtimes, discover APIs on each runtime and check security features and other parameters.

Developer Portal – One or Many

Depending on the group structure of the organization and the needs and requirements of the business units, it is possible to create either a central API Developer Portal to manage access and usage of all APIs of an organization or to split the management into multiple Developer Portals on the same tenant to split up management capabilities and customer access to separate instances for separate business units.

Decoupling of public display and internal IT infrastructure

Depending on the group structure of the organization and the needs and requirements of the business units, it is possible to create either a central API Developer Portal to manage access and usage of all APIs of an organization or to split the management into multiple Developer Portals on the same tenant to split up management capabilities and customer access to separate instances for separate business units.

Bring Your Own Gateway

The APIIDA API Control Plane offers a vendor-independent approach, which allows organizations to maintain their existing infrastructure while still enjoying centralized control and management of their APIs. It enables organizations to avoid vendor lock-in, increase flexibility, and reduce costs, without sacrificing control over their infrastructure. Currently, the APIIDA API Control Plane supports connections to API Gateways from Layer7, Azure, AWS, Gravitee, Kong and WSO2. And more will be added soon.

Central Security

The APIIDA API Control Plane allows the central management of different runtimes. This also allows to enforce organization wide guidelines regarding API security requirements (e.g. authentication schemes, documentation and deployment processes).
